Carthaginians and Romans in Ilergecia The Numismatic Evidence

Francesc Giral

With the exception of one or two isolated finds from an earlier chronology, we can consider that the coins we present here belong to the first of those that reached the Ilergets. From the time the Iberian Peninsula became one of the stages for the Second Punic War and the Ilergets one of the conflict’s main protagonists, contacts with Carthaginians, Romans and other contingents became a regular occurrence. These relations led to the appearance of a new material culture among the indigenous societies and the coins are proof of this.
Thus we present those coins found in Ilerget territory and contextualized within the first wars to take place on the Iberian Peninsula.
